Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Melt butter and chocolate. Beat egg yolks lightly.

Stir some of the chocolate mixture into egg yolks, a little at a time so they don't scramble, until completely combined.

Mix sugar and flour into remaining chocolate mixture. Combine well. Stir in vanilla. Fold in pecans, if using.

Beat egg whites to soft peaks (standing up as much as possible without over whipping). Fold in egg whites.

Pour into 9-inch greased pie plate.
